My Students

It's a whole new world in the realm of communications. We've been doing things the old fashioned way: print. Now we're starting to make our way into convergence—video, audio, print and online. Right now, we're using Garage Band, and our audience knows those loops, so they don't listen.

We're a 9-12 public high school in Texas that's rapidly shifted from firmly middle class to more and more lower socioeconomic.

We're very diverse. Next year our newspaper editor is bilingual, and we hope to develop Spanish podcasts and English podcasts. Several of the students haven't used technology other than their home computers, their cell phones and Facebook before walking into the newsroom. It doesn't take long for them to learn everything from InDesign to PhotoShop to Wordpress. Now we're taking on digital story telling through music, video, audio, still photography and the written word. It takes a little while, but once they get going, my students are fearless with technology. They spend hours working after school now with basics. I can't wait to see what they do with this set of professional tools.

My Project

Logic Studio is an amazing professional audio studio that will allow students to write, record, produce and perform their own professional music while maintaining complete control over timing. They'll be able to use this software while creating podcasts and videos for the entire school community. Right now, they're using Garage Band, which is a solid program. Unfortunately, the Garage Band loops have been used by students for so long now, everyone on campus knows them. Also, they're limited as to the "feel" of the music. Logic Studio is unlimited. The microphone will allow us to incorporate a more professional sound for our work. We've tried a few podcasts already, but they sound windy because we're using the microphones on the computers.

Convergent Media is the wave of the future for journalism.

We have to change from one-dimensional flat story-telling to something more. Students get excited about using state-of-the-art technology. With this project they'll get to learn about online story-telling for the masses, and they'll be able to take that knowledge with them when they graduate. They'll understand more than simple tech applications like Facebook and Word. They'll truly understand the power of story in all its forms.
