My Students

"Mockingbirds don't do one thing but make music for us to enjoy... That's why it's a sin to kill a mockingbird." Harper Lee's compelling novel of racial injustice and growing up is an American classic that my freshmen will never read due to budget cuts and loss of funds.

My students all come from a very rural, poor farming district.

My school is a 7-12 middle/high school and it has an enrollment of 700 students. A large portion of my students do not have computers at home and a good portion will not go on to any post-high school education because they just cannot afford it. Most students have never really experienced the world outside of their small community and they will probably remain in the community once they graduate.

My Project

The novel To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee is an American classic. Most students in the state of Indiana read this book while in high school because it is such a compelling tale of injustice, wisdom and growing up. As freshmen, my students are beginning their high school career and are starting to encounter situations and people they have never dealt with before. This novel (which I have taught at previous schools) is a wonderful way for them to make a connection with characters and theme. It also opens up the potential for wonderful discussions about their lives and the hardships in it. In all the years I've been teaching, this is the one novel that students really connect with, the one novel I've seen make a difference in their lives.

My school has absolutely no money to purchase books.

None. Our students currently owe us $9,000 in book rental money because their parents cannot not afford to pay for them. I am currently using 10+ year old textbooks that are falling apart. The only novel I have for my freshmen is a book that was written for fourth graders because that is all that was available. These books will help to erase the inequity and provide my students with an actual challenge.
