"I teach eighth grade Humanities at a charter school in inner-city Los Angeles. Most of my students are low income second language learners who do not have many opportunities to take trips outside of their neighborhoods. Part of our school's mission is to educate students in a college preparatory environment to be agents of social justice with sensitivity to the world around them. In order to fulfill this mission, students must be exposed to the world outside of their neighborhoods.
I would like to take my two classes of 8th grade students to the Museum of Tolerance in Los Angeles to experience The Holocaust Exhibit and ToleranCenter. The Holocaust Exhibit is a dramatic sound and light presentation that leads the student back in time to Nazi-dominated Europe during World War II. Each student will receive a photo passport card that reveals the story of a child whose life was changed by the Holocaust. The ToleranCenter explores civil rights, human rights abuses and other social issues. These exhibits offer an experience that teaches the meaning of tolerance through the history of the Holocaust and exploration of intolerance in today's world.
This experience will culminate our year's study of American History and social justice issues. It will provide an experiential opportunity for critical dialogue on tolerance in our society that cannot be reproduced in the classroom.
The cost of sending 60 students and four chaperones to the Museum of Tolerance is $575, including fulfillment Mrs. A. sent this note after the project was fully funded: On Jun 21, 2006, Mrs. A. followed this note with student letters sent via mail to the donor who completed this project, and to donors who gave $100 or more.
