My Students

Have you ever wished you had recorded an amazing conversation or story to share with others, but didn't have the necessary equipment?

My students are amazing kids and at my school we are working to turn them into amazing people.

My students are from a very low income area in the city of Chicago. They face many challenges getting to and from school everyday, but they come, and on top of just coming they love learning. They want to be challenged and pushed. They attend a public high school on the Southside of the city.

My Project

We are requesting video cameras as we embark on our process to meet and record activists throughout all walks of life. We are going to be contacting these activists and bringing them to our school to record their stories of action and in bringing positive change to their communities. We are taking part in a brand new project called Civic Voices where my students as well as students from 12 other high schools throughout the U.S. will be doing this project. This project will teach my students invaluable life skills. They will research what is activism, who is an activist, they will contact the person, create questions for the interview, ask and record these questions and responses, they will then be in charge of transcribing the interview and uploading the interview for the other schools to view and share!

This project is important because it highlights the work that people are doing in their communities and it brings the activists and future activists (my students) together in dialogue!

It allows for the stories to be recorded and passed down and not just lost over time.

This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
