My Students

My students come from various cultural backgrounds. This translates into different methods of learning and different languages spoken!

A total of 10 different languages are spoken by my students!

Many of them are newcomers to the US and are struggling to learn science content while also trying to master the English language! For this, and many other reasons, my students need to have the ability to hear a text while reading it. Also, growing up in the age of technology my students have a very, very high interest in anything technology related and this can be a great engagement strategy and an even better method to help them master to important content!

My Project

With a new iPod touch my English Language Learners will have the ability to listen to a text while reading it at the same time. This will also allow the students to listen to the content in their own language and give them a chance to have material presented in a manner that suits their learning styles! Often in our classroom we spend time in stations and students move to a different place in the room every few minutes. Having an iPod touch in the classroom would allow one of these stations to be technology based and provide a place to students to watch a video, use an applet based on physics, or read additions to our new Physics wiki! Finally, this is a great way to acknowledge a student for excellence in the classroom. With the iPod I will be able to take a picture of a student and have the student record a voice memo about what made them particularly proud of that achievement! The student can then upload the file to the wiki for all visitors, including family, to see!

The use of technology instantly engages students! Acknowledging a student's different learning styles and backgrounds makes him or her feel very special and gives them the confidence to be successful in a classroom! When they can put their achievements on display that confidence is boosted to an exponential degree and it gives them a sense of extreme pride. All of these things help a student on their path to success!
