My Students

How are we supposed to understand and appreciate the experience of the European explorers coming to America, or the establishment of the colonies, or Washington's victory in the Revolutionary War when students don't have a large wall map to see it all?

My students form an incredibly diverse population with parents from all over the world.

I have students from Russia, China, Japan, Canada, and Mexico to name just a few. They are bright and inquisitive, each bringing with them their own unique histories, cultures, and experiences to the classroom each day.

My Project

Without a classroom wall map, we are unable to get up out of our seats to study so many of the topics we learn about, particularly in history and social studies. With a large, up-to-date map, students would be better able to grasp the limited view of the world that Europeans had in the 1500s, the significance of da Gama's journey around the southern tip of Africa to India, and the big, open seas that the Spanish traveled over in search of alternate routes. Throughout our school year, we study Native Americans, European explorers, the colonies, the Revolutionary War, and the movement west across America. All of these would be better understood and appreciated with a large wall map of the U.S.A. and world.

My students love to learn.

But "seeing" is so powerful at this age. Being able to trace routes, study distances, and see where one place is in relation to others just brings learning alive. With about 30 students in the classroom, I need a big map to bring them all in to experience the many stories to be told. This map will help my students better understand who we are, where we are, and how we fit into this very diverse world.
