My Students

Can you imagine not being able to play or talk with your best friend? Have you ever considered what it would be like to be unable to communicate your wants or needs to others? What would you do if you were unable to use all of your muscles to the best of your ability. This is a disability.

The students in my class are all autistic.

These characteristics (trouble communicating, trouble with both fine and gross motor skills and isolation inside of themselves) are all every day reality for my students. Repetitive practice to learn to communicate with others, both in conversation and in sharing wants and needs, is a necessity. Learning how to play with friends (both with and without disabilities) and take turns is a lesson. Participating in activities that stress the use of muscles so they will function correctly is a must. The things my students learn in the classroom are every day skills they need to be contributing members of society. These are the things they need that will hopefully one day make them independent adults.

My Project

I am requesting funding for the Wii gaming system and the Wii Resort sports game package. I believe that this system can benefit the students in my room. Autistic students can sometimes share the same characteristic traits. While this is not always the case, I do see some similarities in my students. The two most obvious are their lack of spontaneous conversation or social skills and their delayed motor skills. These are things that students in my class need the most practice with. In order to get that practice, they need to do work. Work in this room is driven by motivation. I see the Wii serving this two-fold purpose: motivating students to complete the work. This system will help with motor skills. The students will need to use both their large and small muscle groups to complete the tasks. Simultaneously, the system will help increase their social skills. The students will learn to be patient, take turns and work together with their peers to complete the sports activities.

My hope is that by acquiring this system the students in my class will learn to become a community instead of a room full of individuals.

While they all share the same space they rarely spend time together spontaneously. By bringing the Wii into the room I am hoping to forge a path toward togetherness, social skills awareness and the importance of conversation between them. These things are key to our communication and interaction with others.
