World War II Oral History Project

My students need a digital camcorder and tripod that will allow them to digitally document the oral histories and interviews of World War II veterans from in Oakland, California.

My Students

Students need to feel invested in the projects that I assign in my class. Project base learning engages students from all walks of life. I am a strong advocate in students working on community base projects where they evaluate the problems in their community and implement practical solutions.

My students are predominately African American students who live in a community that is plagued with violence, drugs, and limited educational opportunities.

My students are sophomores in high school. My students are responsible young adults who are attending a college preparation school located in CA. Although our high school is a college preparation school, many students need to overcome many hurdles to attain their post-secondary degrees. The lack of resources are a major problem that my students face. Any additional resources available to my students will enhance their educational experience and prepare them for college.

My Project

Students will work on a oral history project. They will interview World War II veterans from the West Oakland community. Students will get to listen and digitally document the voices of war veterans who experienced the World War II. Students will learn about the segregation of troops, the fighting Europe, and learn what came out of World War II. Digital camcorder will students to record their interviews, edit their videos, show them to their peers and post them on the Internet to share with the world.

The oral history project will allow students to interview their family members and community members who participated in World War II.

They will learn from the experiences of World War II veterans. After their interviews, they will need to edit their digitally recorded interviews and present their projects and interviews at a school and community assembly. Students will feel invested in their projects and have a digital recording of their project to share with the world on the Internet.

This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
