Our Pencils are all Broken and Junk!

My students need new pencil sharpeners and pencils because we have had difficulties keeping our pencils sharpened this year which has caused them to be broken and junky!

My Students

My students are having a hard time with keeping their pencils sharpened because our pencil sharpeners are so junky. We started out with an electric sharpener that would not sharpen the pencils at all. The electric ones we have tried this year are junky and the kids can't operate the manual ones.

My second grade Super Stars attend a school that has been faced with many economical challenges this year.

With budget cuts being so harsh, we have not had the money like we normally have at the beginning of school to order new school supplies. This caused us to start school with our old pencil sharpeners from last year. The electric sharpeners were so worn out that they didn't sharpen the kids' pencils effectively. A kind parent donated a small electric sharpener, but it did not withstand the wear and tear of the demanding need for sharpening pencils daily. We resorted to the old manual style sharpener. My students had a hard time operating it effectively, and finally it broke. We are now on our second manual sharpener which is wobbly and is not working properly. The students have tried the small hand held sharpeners, but they make a mess all on the floor and do not sharpen easily. We need a good sharpener that will last for a while so that we can be better writers. Please help!

My Project

By helping us get our pencils sharpened more easily, my students can be better writers and do their work. We spend time trying to get the old pencil sharpener to work, and then we have to bother our neighboring teacher to borrow their sharpener. We have had our custodian install our second manual sharpener recently which has already become a junky mess. The pencil sharpeners that I have requested have a two year warranty, so if they tear up, we can get those replaced. It seems that they don't make pencil sharpeners like they used to because they do not last very long. This may seem like a minor problem, but not having proper sharpened pencils can cause the students' work to be a mess. The kids have had problems with this all year. If we can get the pencil sharpeners we requested, we plan to give our neighboring teacher one of them because she has been so generous to let us use her sharpener during our times of daily frustration. Please help us sharpen our pencils!

The kids have become so frustrated trying to sharpen pencils that I have noticed that they use them when they are barely sharpened which causes them to write poorly.

Our pencils have gotten so low that we just have the most junky pencils and sharpeners that I have ever seen in fifteen years of teaching. The new sharpeners we have gotten this year have torn up so quickly and the kids have tried to take care of them. We need a couple of really good sharpeners to help us do our work better.
