Acting Up! Promoting You: The Actor

My students need a digital camera, photo printer and paper to be able to market themselves as actors by taking headshots to submit to college theatre departments.

My Students

I remember what it was like the first time I had to submit a headshot for an audition. No one had ever told me how to have one made. That was the only way to market myself. I want my students to have that knowledge as they head to college and other auditions.

My students come from such varied backgrounds.

That is what I love about teaching drama: everyone is on level ground. Theatre does not make distinctions between rich or poor, black or white, football player or musician. Because all of my students work together to achieve the same goal, they learn that class distinctions can be left outside. The one thing I wish I had learned in school is how to be a working actor. I wish I had known how to market myself. This is an invaluable tool for these students to have.

My Project

I am requesting a good digital camera, a multi-function photo printer, and glossy photo paper. With these materials the students will be able to begin to put together a portfolio for either their higher education goals, or if they choose to go directly into the workforce, they will have the portfolio to take with them. In addition to the headshots they will be taking, I will be teaching them how to put together a resume. I believe marketing oneself is a skill that many young people do not have. It could be one of the most important skills to have.

Like I mentioned before, self-marketing is so very important for young people.

Many of these students will never have the money to have "professional" headshots taken. By working with them in class, I can teach them how to take their own headshots, as well as compile a resume.
