Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

A 21st Century work environment invites students also to invest in their learning.

I teach 9th grade Earth and Environmental Science in a small, public, inner city school.

The school focuses on design education and college preparation. We attract students from all over the city, most of whom are eligible for free lunch. My course prepares all of our incoming students to transition from middle school-level to high school science. It is interdisciplinary and skills-based in nature, and helps students to weave together a mixture of earth and environmental science ideas. Making real-world connections is often difficult for students and doing hands-on investigations in a 21st Century science learning environment enables this kind of thinking.

My Project

The Vernier Lab Probes and Interfaces will enable us to easily gather data during hands-on investigations. These probes will help my students to develop their "data literacy", a theme at our school that helps students to learn data and graphing skills, and to think about the role data plays in constructing new knowledge. Remember in the old days when one of your lab partners (or you) had to watch the second hand on the clock while someone else read the temperature on the thermometer? Those days are over. Because these tools are digital, they help students simply to focus on the data and what it means, rather than gathering the data.

Your donation will help to transform our classroom into the kind of professional, motivating and relevant learning environment my students deserve in order to develop 21st century skills that will serve them in college, the workplace, and beyond.
