My Students

The standards for my journalism, English and theater arts classes require students to branch out and express themselves with multimedia. Very difficult to do if you do not have access to a video camera. If students had access to this media then they could tell their stories using multimedia.

My students live in a rural setting where hard work is expected and items like a movie camera are considered a luxury, not a necessity.

Many of these young people are third, and in some cases, fourth and fifth generations to grow up in this community. They value family and traditions. Our school is a 9-12 high school with approximately 700 students. Students can walk down the halls of our school and point to the class pictures that show a picture of their sibling, parent, and or grandparent. We still have homecoming parades around the town square, Friday night football is a social event, and some of our graduates are the first in their family to graduate from high school. For many of our students, the introduction of media into their lives comes not from home, but from school. If these students are to compete in college, they need to learn and have the opportunity to have hands-on experience with multi-media.

My Project

People who live in rural areas are often characterized as "country" and "stupid" by mass media. Our rural students are often asked why they want to live in the country and are made to feel inferior because they choose to stay and work in a rural area. As a teacher and member of the rural community, I want to inspire my students to be proud of where they live and why they live there. The NPR storytelling segment has inspired me to have my students interview their families and neighbors and create media projects that let residents explain why they stayed in their communities after high school; why they come back after college; why some family members stay and why some go away. I feel this will make our students more appreciative of who they are and what they come from. In addition, I hope this will inspire students to make career choices that reflect the needs they see are needed to keep our rural area populated.

Instructing at the secondary level has taught me that a student's confidence and self-esteem markedly affect his/her ability to learn.

A student can have a high IQ and great test scores; however, if she or she does not have the opportunity to express gained knowledge then learning has not taken place. The introduction of multi-media presentations into our curricula gives the student the opportunity to apply knowledge. This opportunity is possible provided the student has the right tools.
