My Students

As a child of Atari, I'm used to a joy stick with one button. As a father of a 5-year-old who has already mastered his Leapster, I realize that electronic learning is miles beyond pitfall and pacman. At home, I see my son mastering greater than & less than at 5, something I TEACH in 3rd grade.

My students, low socio-economic, "title-1", and severely underprivileged, have not had such access to learning games like my son.

Any games they play are usually "skills based", and not the best kinds of skills, shooting, robbing, and thieving. They are all great kids, but haven't had the best opportunities, nor know the best options. When guided the right way, they blossom into amazing kids.

My Project

We are living in an electronic age. Kids learn texting before they learn cursive, if they learn that at all! While we work to teach our kids to read and use "traditional" materials, electronic media is definitely the predominant medium. It is important that our students learn that there is more to gaming than shooting things and blowing things up.

Because I know they have such potential, and such affinity to video games, I would love to be able to meld them both into a fun learning activity.

They can think they are getting the "easy" station, but these games will teach them the basics, things they don't even realize they are learning! And isn't that the best way? Realizing you learned something AFTER you learned it?
