Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach an amazing group of second graders in a high-need community and they are in desperate need of access to technology! Our school has virtually no technology and what little we do have teachers must share and it is so outdated that half the time it doesn't work at all.

Picture this - you are teaching 25 seven-year-old children that have a tough time keeping engaged with the dull worksheets they have to share because our school is out of paper - learning suffers.

With recent enormous budget cuts, it is unlikely that we will be introducing any type of technology to our students. Our current technology is lacking in excitement. We have a computer lab in which only 10 computers are sometimes operable and teachers sign up to use it once a week for 20 minute. My students become frustrated and express their disappointment by saying they don't like computers.

My Project

Recently several generous donors provided funding for a document camera to our classroom. The kids call it "The Magic Camera" and their enthusiasm for learning increased. This inspired me and I purchased Internet access through a cell phone provider. This has allowed me to conduct searches with students as well as tapped into interactive academic enrichment games, but only when I can gain access to the school's LCD projector, which is shared by a staff of 23 teachers. My students have made great progress with the incorporation of the document camera and the Internet access, but I can only imagine the progress we could achieve if we could use these tools on a daily basis! Reading, math, science, social studies, global issues will be at the tip of their fingertips on a daily basis!

We were recently informed that our school ran out of copy paper so now more than ever it is with a sense of urgency that I invite you to donate to this project!

I really hope you will consider changing the way my students see their world of learning and inspire them to seek out being participants in an ever-advancing technological world! My students don't have to be disadvantaged in this area with your help. I hope you can improve their learning by making a difference through this proposal.
