Learning Through Seeing

My students need a telescope to observe and learn about the stars.

My Students

My students are learning about the universe. The problem is they are learning about things they have never seen. When you get the chance to see Saturn with your own two eyes it changes how you learn. Instead of learning about something invisible, they are learning about something real.

My students live in a poverty stricken community.

Most of them never even leave the valley. The school is just now beginning to incorporate technologically advanced equipment into the curriculum. Students are for the first time seeing different types of technology they never knew existed. With the addition of a NexStar SE, my students not only will be exposed to advanced technology, but they also will be able to authentically experience the universe for themselves.

My Project

The telescope has the ability to focus in on planets, stars and galaxies that my students would never dream of seeing. The telescope also has the ability to take photos with an SRL camera. With the use of this telescope I will have the opportunity to teach Astronomy, and provide the community with a way of becoming more involved with students learning. Last year I ran a star lab at night using a borrowed telescope. The telescope was not very advanced and my students had a hard time seeing the planets. I also had near 30 people show up to the star lab. Some of the people who came were community members. This showed me that the students and community are eager to learn. This year I am hoping to continue my star labs with my classes and invite parents to participate in the labs too.

Many of our students come to school expecting to do worksheets and listen to someone talk.

This way of teaching doesn't work for many, and we end up losing these students. This telescope will hopeful reach some of these students by providing them with an authentic experience that they will not forget. It is through authentic experiences that students gain the motivation to learn. I want to motivate my students by showing them the universe.
