Science Computer Resource Corner, Part 2

My students need an additional computer to use during science class for internet research, graphing data, and video projects.

My Students

My students lack the computer resources to create data tables and graphs from labs, complete Internet research on science topics, and present information using technology.

My students are 11th and 12th graders taking science in a high poverty, inner city public school district.

They have a great deal of curiosity about the world and enjoy using technology, but we have no consistent access to computers in science. It would help them learn more skills to succeed in college if they could have access on a regular basis to computers.

My Project

My students will benefit a great deal from having additional computers in the classroom. We currently have three computers and they are shared by classes of up to 35 students. This limits the amount of time each student has at the computer, and the kinds of activities we can use them for. Many of these skills they are lacking put them at a big disadvantage for college, and they need to catch up with these skills before graduating. The kinds of activities we could use the computers for include: Internet research, lab reporting, PowerPoint presentations, brochure creation, concept map construction, poster creation, and video project editing. Science is always changing and the chance to be connected to current discoveries and research would be wonderful. We could also utilize several online lab sites such as explorelearning.com, brainpop.com, and Colorado's pHet simulations.

Our school lacks many basic resources and the most useful thing that could be acquired by my science class to make it more relevant and prepare my students more for college and the workplace would be additional computers.

My goal is to have enough for each lab group to have one, but we currently only have three for the entire class of up to 35 students.
