My Students

My students, each day, are faced with the same textbook. The images are small, still, and simple. A certain history teacher I had made history come to life by showing the faces, places, and documents as he spoke. Visual images connected to the lesson at hand help to solidify the lesson.

When I moved from a beach-side community in Florida to this poor, rural farming community in Alabama, I was humbled.

The students wear ill-fitting clothing and personal hygiene seems a distant thought. One thing, however, I have learned is that learning can take place anywhere, even with kids whose home-life seems bleak and future seems even less clear. And, with a little bit of care and concern on the part of the teacher, these kids can be inspired.

My Project

So far, this year I have received grants for a new projector bulb, and a Smartboard! With those and a new Elmo document camera, I can continue to make my history lessons come to life. Rather than "turning to page 132 in their textbook" they can view a full screen image of Abraham Lincoln, look into his eyes, and see the sorrow and the difficult choices he had to make. They can see a larger than life Gettysburg Address penned by Lincoln clarifying the purpose of the war at hand. And, as the students complete their own projects, they will be able to display them with the Elmo for the entire class to admire!
