Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are loving book club, but we are running out of books. I recently put my students into book clubs with the few book club sets the school has and my students have been reading like crazy. They beg me to do book club and are actually having amazing conversations about their books.
There is not a book store in my students' neighborhood.
The only access that my students have to books is through school. The goal of our school is to prepare students for college despite living in an inner city poverty stricken area. My students, despite their hardships, want to learn and to read!
My Project
Cut backs this year have hurt our classroom libraries tremendously. Book club is even harder, because we need four copies of the book, so students can read the book together. I want to provide my students with challenging books that will promote discussion and debate. Books like "Sold" about child labor, and "Wintergirls" about anorexia, deal with real issues that my students can learn from.
Please help my students keep their book clubs alive!
For the first time many students are actually excited about reading. When they walk in the door asking, "Can we do book club today?" I don't want to tell them we can't, because we do not have enough books.
