World War II Research Materials - Images and Texts

My students need a set of books to explore World War II through images, graphs, photographs, and first person accounts as part of an annual research project.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our middle school shares a library with an elementary school downstairs that does not have grade level appropriate material for 8th graders. A handful of books like these would allow us to explore World War II and develop college-ready research skills.

I teach at a free, public school located in New York.

The student body is approximately 60% Latino and 40% African American, with over 85% receiving free or reduced school lunches. This is a complicated way of saying that our school serves an otherwise under-served portion of New York. That being said, last year our school was one of the highest ranked middle schools in the state. We have a simple mission - to prepare every student for college. We do this every day with the resources we have - time, energy, and spirit - but ultimately our classrooms need books for our students to learn. This year our history department has tried to build an internal department library of grade level appropriate, non-fiction materials that we can use to teach our units without depending solely on textbooks. Watching our students devour the books we have been lucky enough to procure has been incredible.

My Project

This small collection of books on World War II contain a wealth of images, stories, and insight into all elements of World War II. From the rise of Nationalism in Europe and the struggles of U.S. and England throughout the 1930s to the human impact of the war and its legacy, every aspect of World War II is captured by these texts. Through timelines, photographs, and primary and secondary accounts, this collection will bring the war to life and help students grasp how such horrific events could occur. These books use amazing images that put the horror of war in perspective and leave students with an understanding of how WWII shaped the world we live in today.

I hope to expose my students to a diverse group of materials on World War II, allow them to analyze the events from different perspectives, and reach their own conclusions on the war.

Textbooks and pre-made materials just won't accomplish this goal. In order to prepare our students for college they must be able to read and analyze a diverse range of materials and reach their own conclusions. Your help in providing these materials would be incredibly appreciated for years to come.
