My Students

Our hands are tired! We do not have a printer or a copier. We have burned out a pencil sharpener and cannot keep pencils.

My school has a 99% free and reduced lunch rate.

The majority of the students live in two bedroom homes with more than five siblings and parents and grandparents. Many are being raised by grandparents or single mothers. They happen to be very smart second graders that enjoy technology. They have learned to create PowerPoints, and write letters on the computers. They love being able to come to class early just to help get the room ready for the day. Sharpening pencils in the morning is a duty they seem to cherish. The school does not allow any copies to be made outside of the grade level newsletters and test for grade 3-5. My second graders are having to write everything they do and it is making them miserable, and it is wasting a lot of learning time. Time that can be spent creating is used for coping. They also cannot print any of their creations from the computers. I have burned out two ink jet printer/copiers trying to spare them. I am going broke with a smile. I just need some help.

My Project

With the requested resources my students will be able to print out the slides of their PowerPoints and letters they write to friends and family. Their work can be printed and ready for them when class starts instead of them copying the materials and wasting valuable teaching and learning time. They have a software program that helps them with reading and math. The program offers certificates for them to print and they will be able to print them and share the success with their parents. The pencils and sharpener will secure their ability to continue to work. I do not want the sharpener to stop working without us having a replacement. The students love helping and I do not want them to be disappointed.

My students know that I care about them.

I have told them how people will help others that are helping themselves. They are not complainers they will happily continue to copy all of their work. They will also continue to donate their nickels and dimes so that we will have plenty of pencils for the class. The donor that provides these materials will show this class that hard work has its rewards. This donation will teach them to keep working hard.
