Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I recently had all my students crowded around my desktop computer to watch a hummingbird egg hatching in a nest via a live webcam. It was thrilling to witness nature with them, but at the same time unsatisfying as the kids jostled each other for a better view.

The Northern California school where I teach is the heart of a neighborhood of hard-working, non-English-speaking families.

The students live in high-poverty conditions, eating a free breakfast and lunch at our cafeteria every weekday--even during the summer. The school provides access to many free services for the community, like tutoring, after-school care, and English classes for parents. There's a free health clinic van that serves our families each week. The local food bank delivers fresh vegetables and fruits on Fridays. As English Learners, the students get so much more from learning--especially Math & Science--when there is a big visual impact rather than just black and white words in a textbook. I work hard to find ways to reach them using a structured environment that is multi-sensory and hands-on.

My Project

Through a technology grant, I received a projector and document camera to replace the out-moded overhead projector. It is fantastic, but it won't work with my older desktop computer, so we are still unable to access the wealth of science videos & interactive math applications that exist for students and teachers on the web. Most of my students don't have home computers, so they are not able to access the Internet to extend the learning they've received during the school day. With an HP Laptop, we can run webquests, learn using multimedia presentations, and even view DVDs for rainy-day recess.

My students are bright and excited about learning.

They are ready to make a positive impact on their community and improve the lives of their families. They need to receive science and math content that is engaging and inspiring, and at the same time experience all that current technology can provide to give them the best chance for success as adults.
