My Students

"Yay! We get to go to the computer lab today!" This cheer greets me every Monday. Our class is able to visit the lab one day a week, and we love it! However, there are many times during the day that a quick computer search would answer a question or explain a concept better than words alone.

I teach 5th Grade in an elementary school whose students are largely from military families.

More than 40% of our students are economically disadvantaged; many of them are currently in single parent homes due to deployments in often hostile environments.

My Project

We were recently fortunate enough to have a netbook funded by the generous donors on DonorsChoose.org. It has become so popular with my students, I would like to have one for each of my cooperative learning groups. Another netbook computer readily available in the classroom would allow several students to search for descriptions, explanations, or examples of new words and concepts at the moment their curiosity is piqued. . . no waiting! It would give our technological generation a way to learn in the way they are most accustomed...through technology! These tiny classroom computers allow students to delve more deeply in areas where there is already an interest. Although a netbook appears to be a computer that forgot to grow up, the processing power of this tiny computer is perfect for my students, with speeds that rival ones that are often more than twice as expensive.

Your help in funding another netbook will allow my students to use familiar and current technology to research areas of interest without having to wait another week for their turn in the computer lab.
