My Students

My students have recently been involved in a study of the Native Americans residing in Michigan during its early days. They have studied their culture, ways of life and legends. They have been introduced to the legends of Michigan and now I would like to continue their enthusiasm for this genre.

My class is a 3rd and 4th grade, multi-age classroom in which 90% of my students are African, Asian, Hispanic or Afro-American.

Many are first generation Americans. I utilize interpreters speaking three different languages to communicate with my parents. All of my students are considered high risk, living well below the poverty level. One of the exciting things which has happened this March, during "March is Reading Month" is that my students have really become interested in reading. Particularly reading the "Legend of the Sleeping Bear" which describes the creation of the Sleeping Bear dunes in Michigan. From there they started to become obsessed with "The Diary of a Wimpy Kid" series. In order to get books like these into my student's hands, books they are excited about, I need to find ways to provide them for them. In most cases the only books my students have in their homes have been provided in some way through the school or their teacher.

My Project

This year my students have been fascinated with the art of Gijbert VanFrankenhuyzen. Gijbert (known to the students as Nick) and his wife spent two days at our school showing students how they create children's books. The children have become enamored with Nick. He taught them how to begin creating illustrations, guiding them through the process and encouraging them all to believe they could draw. My plan is to continue studying the Native Americans of our state and their contributions to the culture, history and development of this region through books illustrated by Nick. The legends we have explored so far have really added to the children's desire to learn more about how the Native American's viewed the creation of Michigan. Now we would like to add the following multiple copies to our collection: The Legend of Leelanau, The Legend of the Christmas Tree Ship, The Legend of Michigan, The Legend of the Lady Slipper, Tears of Mother Bear, and Voyageur's Paddle, plus others.

Your generosity will afford my students the opportunity to explore stories written by a well known and talented author and illustrator from our state.

The more opportunities my students have to read great literature, the more likely it is that they will become lifelong readers and learners. Your generosity may facilitate that enthusiasm - an enthusiasm I hope will last a lifetime.
