Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Do you remember being so inspired after watching a great movie that you want to read the oringial book? I want to inspire my students to read more through a visual lens. So many movies originated as stories and plays.

My students are high-poverty students and are at-risk of not graduating.

They are from the inner-city and have more life experience than many of the other students in the United States. Our school is a young school, so resources and consistency is still a problem. They have a lot of emotional issues, but this makes them better for reading and writing texts.

My Project

People of all ages enjoy movies. I hope to inspire my students to fall in love with the books that accompany the movies. Most movies come from books, so students need to learn how the text translates into the big screen. The themes of movies - love, betrayal, relationships, violence, family, death, etc - is easy for someone visualize but reading is the true media.

Many of my students cannot afford to go to the movies or rent movies at home.

To prevent them from buying illegal versions of movies, I want to provide them a place to enjoy movies in relation to text. This will help them realize the process of words making their way to the big screen. These issues of technology, reading, writing, themes of literature, politics in movies, and the influence of media will help better prepare these students for college.

This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
