My Students

Which is better? The book or the movie? Well, my students want to find out the answer to this question. In our library, we do not have enough copies of books recently made into movies like, The Lightning Thief, and Diary of a Wimpy Kid. The waiting lists are too long!

The books with the longest waiting lists are the Diary of a Wimpy Kid Series by Jeff Kinney, and the Percy Jackson and the Olympian Series by Rick Riordan.

What is interesting about these books is that they greatly appeal to male readers. I want to do all that I can to keep the boys at my school interested in reading. They eagerly devour all the comic books and graphic novels that are available for checkout. I see this as my opportunity to guide them towards longer works of fiction. As of March 12th, I have a list of 14 boys waiting on one of the Diary of a Wimpy Kid books. The list for the Percy Jackson series is at 10 with all but one being boys. The school library is the only access many of our students have to books. I want to keep their interest in reading sparked. They are so disappointed when they come in and ask if the book is in yet and I have to say no.

My Project

I am requesting two additional copies of the Diary of the Wimpy Kid Series and three additional copies of the Percy Jackson series. This will allow me to get the books that kids, especially boys, really want into their hands. This will show kids that their needs are important and respected, especially at their school library. The addition of these books will get more students reading and, hopefully, help build these students into lifelong readers.

The Lightning Thief book was popular before the movie came out, but now its popularity has exploded.

With a Diary of Wimpy Kid movie set to be released March 19th, this book's popularity will reach even higher levels. I want to be able to meet the students' demands for these popular books.
