My Students

Far too often children are given reading assignments that hold no interest for them and are not relevant to their lives. Catching and maintaining their attention requires literature that mirrors their world, thoughts, feelings, and experiences.

My students are as diverse as the world around them.

Our metropolitan school reflects this diversity through our students’ and parents’ multicultural backgrounds and varied socioeconomics. While my students have a desire to be successful, many still require the guidance and structure received in the classroom to achieve their educational and personal best. Many of the students lack the exposure to the world beyond our county, but can take a journey with other adolescents’ through quality literature.

My Project

I believe "The Pigman" will help further the development of the children's reading and writing skills and provide a resource to help develop higher order thinking skills. Most importantly, the theme of "The Pigman" will capture their interest and spark their desire to become lifelong readers. The universality of the theme will provide a springboard for application to my student’s real-world experiences. Through this novel, we can see ourselves, our world, and our lives through a different perspective. Zindel's life growing up was much like many of my students: moving numerous times, having difficulty making and keeping friends, and experiencing the angst of adolescence and the changes this brings. Zindel captures these emotions and experiences through the pages of "The Pigman.” In addition, students will learn that we all are very similar, regardless of time, age, gender, or culture and be able to apply this knowledge.

Donations for the purchase of a class set of “The Pigman” novel will be the beginning of introducing literature that is relevant to our children, and motivates them to become lifelong readers.

Additionally, through this novel, we can explore similar themes, experiences, and literature that are applicable to our 21st Century learners.
