My Students

If you ever listened to a child who was engaged in imaginary play with his toys or friends, you probably heard some words and phrases you never thought he knew! In fact, we often hear our own words reflected in the play of children. Kids can do a perfect imitation of mom, dad, and the teacher!

I have a class of twenty children in rural Georgia.

They are all between the ages of four and five and many of them really haven't had very much life experience. We have some children who have never been out of the state and some who have never been out of the county. We have eleven girls and nine boys. Our classroom is full of many learning experiences. I would like for our dramatic play area to be a little bit more interesting for the children- because their play is their work.

My Project

I am requesting a set of career outfits. This set includes many of the community helper outfits that we learn about in school. I think it is important for children to be able to pretend to be "heroes" such as policemen and firemen so they grow up with the ambitions of becoming one later in life. Pretend play provides children with a variety of problems to solve. When children pretend to be different characters, they gain the experience of "walking in someone else's shoes," which helps teach the important moral development skill of empathy. It is normal for young children to see the world from their own egocentric point of view, but through maturation and cooperative play, children will begin to understand the feelings of others. My students will also learn about different roles that each community helper learns in our community.

I have always loved playing pretend.

I would like to give the children in my classroom the same opportunities that I had growing up. I feel that this is important because children will also build self-esteem as they discover they can be anything just by pretending! Research has also shown that pretend play provides children with a microcosm for life that encourages them to take the skills they have learned in classroom lessons and apply them to meaningful life activities.
