My Students

Do you remember when your teacher told you that you had to do a book report? It was usually met with moans. Do you want to know what is funny? My class loves completing book reports and sharing them with their classmates! These are not your average reports! These are award winning reports!

My 18 students are absolutely fabulous!

Each child in my room has a unique and rich background which enhances my room. My classroom make-up is 16 African American, 1 Hispanic, and 1 Caucasian child. They all learn from one another and work together beautifully! In my classroom we act as family and they treat one another like they are brothers and sisters. I teach in a Title I school that has recently had the honor of being named an Inside Out School! We are in the process of changing the way students (and parents) view school. Our theme is innovation and we strive to do this in the different things we do! The majority attend school from 7:15-4:45. This makes a long school day but they are enriched with different clubs and learning experiences all day long!

My Project

How will these resources change my students lives? It's amazing what happens when a child falls in love with a book. I hope you have or will have the pleasure of seeing a child that cannot tear his/her eyes from the page and cannot wait to tell his/her friends about the great novel he/she is reading! Reading enriches my students lives. Literacy is not cherished in most of their homes and books to read are few and far between for them. They gobble up new books like candy because it is a treat that they do not get very often. At the beginning of the year we focus on a SC Book Award Nominee a week. We preview the book, look at other books the author has published, and discuss the pros and cons of the book. After we have discussed all the books students are given the choice of which book they would like to do their book report on. This report requires a paper, illustrations, visual, and oral report. All literacy standards are implanted in this report and the students love it!

If this project is funded you will have 18 children and 1 teacher forever grateful for your generosity!

You are giving these students a rare treat that they rarely get to experience...the gift of literacy! In a world where most books are taken for granted and not used to their full potential, my students take a book and use it to the breaking point. From book talks to presenting a high school level report, literacy is used to enhance and enrich their lives like never before!
