My Students

"Reading is to the mind as exercise is to the body" is our current "theme of the month." My students have done a lot of mental exercise this year, and as a result are reading well above grade level! But my classroom library hasn't kept up with their progress - we need higher books!

I am a third grade teacher at a high-performing charter school in NY.

This is my fourth year teaching in the school. My first two years were as a Teach for America corps member, but then I fell in love with the students and families, and decided to stay. This year, I looped with my class from 2nd to 3rd grade. I have 27 students who come from a variety of West Indian, African, and Latin American backgrounds. My school is in a very high-poverty area, and we've been able to give our motivated and supportive families a great school choice in the neighborhood. My students have been working hard and are reading on a 4th grade level - they love all kinds of books, and often choose reading over talking to their friends at breakfast and lunch. Some of their favorite authors are Betsy Byars, Andrew Clements and Kate diCamillo, and they LOVE the Magic School Bus and You Wouldn't Want To... series.

My Project

Independent reading is the MOST important part of our curriculum - it's the time when students are able to apply what they know about literacy to a book on their level, that they have selected. When picking the books for this project, I asked them to nominate favorite authors and series, so I know that I have selected high interest texts that will keep their noses in books. This is the single most important factor in increasing their reading abilities. As we say at our school, practice makes permanent - we just need more resources to practice with. I've picked just enough books for my students to each have 2 new texts at a time.

Because of budget cuts, the money I had saved out of my classroom budget to buy books has disappeared.

Without your generosity and support, my students will not be able to have independent reading books at the level they are now reading, and their incredible academic gains will be slowed down. These books will enrich my classroom for years to come!
