My Students

How would you feel if you did not have the ability to speak when you had things to say while being vocationally trained in the community?

I work with children and adults with autism spectrum disorders in a public school in New York.

They are, for the most part, nonverbal. They currently communicate using large, bulky non-portable voice output communication devices at their vocational training Yorkist's. The students miss opportunities to communicate, comment and or respond to questions because these bulky devices are not user friendly. Most of the time they carry adapted picture symbol booklets that allow them to only point to the picture symbols but do not allow them to gain someone’s attention that is not in their immediate vicinity. These picture booklets are limited in that they do not have a voice output component and only a limited number of novel sentences can be created.

My Project

I am requesting the ipod Touch because my students can utilize applications such as “Proloquo2go: AAC in Your Pocket” (HTTP://proloquo2go.com/) which include the natural sounding text-to-speech voices, picture communication symbols, and over 7000 picture symbol vocabulary words that the students are familiar with. As a result, my students will communicate their wants and needs in the community with greater ease.

The ipod Touch will improve my students’ overall quality of life in the community work-site training because of its’ size, portability and its’ modern look; which will attract the student’s interest.

The ipod Touch demonstrates with good long term potential for my students’ when they graduate out of the public school system. The availability of the ipod Touch will improve my student’s likelihood to obtain future employment and will allow them to develop to their full personal potential.
