My Students

My students don't have many books at home, but I am doing my best to provide lots of variety for them at school! One of the ways I want to do this is by enriching the book selection I have for our Leap Pad Learning Systems.

My students are a fantastic group of 18 kindergarteners who come from a variety of backgrounds.

Most of them do not speak English at home and their parents struggle to support them with their school work because they do not speak English. At our school about 80% of our students receive a free or reduced priced lunch due to living in situations of poverty. Despite the challenges in their young lives, they are eager to learn and want to read!

My Project

By adding more books to our Leap Pad library, I will give my students options when it is time to do literacy centers. Additional books will provide variety to keep the students motivated and interested in reading. The books I am requesting will help the students learn letters, letter sounds, and words which are foundational skills the students need to acquire in order to become strong readers. The Leapster game pad will go with a reading and math game I received previously. I can monitor what is done with it online. The students are very motivated by all types of technology so the opportunity to use a game pad during our literacy centers will encourage them to work hard to be able to use it. Students can practice math or reading with the Leapster and I can evaluate their progress, it is a win-win situation for both of us!

The materials I am requesting with this project are materials that will be used over and over again!

The donations you make to this project will provide more variety for my students and in turn motivate them to continue learning their letters, sounds and words. The best learning occurs when it is input in a variety of ways - you are helping me do that by donating to this project and providing a variety of interactive books for my students!
