My Students

Give us a voice! After an audio-visually rich unit of examining the components of nonfiction films, my students are ready to get behind the lens and create their own. But we need your help in order to conduct interviews, capture events and explore the tough challenges facing our Bronx high school.

My students primarily come from the Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico, though many have spent most of their lives growing up in the Bronx.

Our school is traditionally a technical school, though the hands-on tech time is alarmingly limited. Most of my students come from low-income homes; 95% of the student population is eligible for the free lunch program. My ESL students are good kids, though the majority of them have not developed the skills or discipline necessary to compete in the outside world. I have experienced serious attendance issues; however, by developing not only engaging curriculum, but also a strong rapport with them in and outside of the class, I have witnessed academic and personal growth in nearly all of my students.

My Project

For the past few weeks we have been "reading" nonfiction films in order to examine their components--speaker, audience, tone, etc. My students have been learning how to get into each filmmaker's shoes and explore perspective and purpose. As a culminating project I want the kids to become the filmmakers themselves and reveal an aspect of our school through their own eyes. I have requested 5 digital cameras (and a bag for safe keeping) so that each student group may use a camera (simultaneously if necessary) to capture footage for their specific project. Prior to filming, we will brainstorm ideas and approaches based on the films we have studied. Some ideas already suggested are: Our School's History (1931-present) and the Washington D.C. Performance for President Obama in April. In addition to ESL-related skills, my students will also learn technical skills such as camera operation and compiling and editing footage. Finally, they will present their final products to the class.

That may not seem like much, but this is a rare opportunity for them to experience ownership of something self-directed and unique. The potential for transformation is great because it puts the power squarely in their hands. It gives them permission to shoot what they see, how they see it; and comment on it how they see fit. I'm excited to see what I know they are capable of creating.
