My Students

Girls often are overlooked when it comes to sports. We are one of LESS THAN 20 public middle school softball teams in the city! This season we have joined a middle school league in which we will be playing 10 regular season games and up to 3 post-season play-off games. We need to be equipped!

We are a public middle school located in the heart of Brooklyn, New York.

Many of the students are new immigrants to the country. The girls are excited about learning and after-school activities. However, there are few sports teams for the girls to participate in. Most of the students are not in a position to pay for expensive equipment themselves. Our school has strict rules about fundraising, so we have not been able to collect funds this way.

My Project

Obesity is on the rise across the country, but especially in urban areas. The softball team is a way to not only get girls active, but to inspire leadership and team building qualities in adolescent girls. Organized, after school activities help to keep kids off the street and away from many of the pressures teens face growing up in the city. Girls that are active and part of a team also tend to have higher self-esteems and a more positive body image.

The resources we are hoping to be donated, will ensure a successful after-school softball program where girls, ages 11-14, will learn the value of hard work, learning something new, and sportsmanship; qualities they can use past the middle school years.
