My Students

Help us hear our teacher! Ten years of teaching first grade has left me with nodules on my vocal chords. The only way to get rid of them without surgery is to be very protective of my voice and only speak in quiet and soft tones.

I teach first grade at a low socio-economic school in Louisiana.

I have a very high rate of students who have ADHD. Children with ADHD have a very hard time focusing on the lesson instead of other distractions in the environment. I also have students who come to me that have a very hard time following directions and listening. Part of the first grade curriculum is learning how to focus and listen.

My Project

A wireless microphone system in my classroom will allow me to save my voice and make sure that all of my students have heard me. The primary benefit is to make sure that 100% of what I say is being absorbed by the children. Nothing is more important than what the teacher says and what the students hear. So many things interfere with what is being said by the teacher. Things like coughing, chairs moving around, fingers stirring through colors, etc. can all be distractions that keep students from hearing me. Most children do not have the ability to fill in the blank if they miss even one word of what a teacher says. A voice amplification system can ensure that my students do not miss a word of what I say without me having to raise my voice all day long. In addition, it will help students with educational exceptions be able to focus more clearly on what is being said and not on distractions around them.
