Texas Bluebonnet Books for the Classroom

My students need copies of 19 Texas Bluebonnet books, including "That Book Woman" and "Calvin Coconut: Trouble Magnet".

My Students

Do you remember the first book you loved so much that you couldn't put it down? The one you kept reading even though you were so tired? That's how great the Texas Bluebonnet Books are! These books get kids excited about reading and help them to grow everyday to become lifelong learners!

My school is a public school in Texas.

The students are economically diverse. About half the population comes from middle and upper class families, while the other half is economically disadvantaged. My students are avid readers and my goal each year is to instill in each of them a love of books and learning.

My Project

Each year the Texas Library Association chooses 20 books to be on the Texas Bluebonnet List. The books vary in reading levels and genre. The list includes non-fiction, fiction, chapter books, picture books, poetry, and a variety of culturally diverse books. After TLA chooses the books to be on the list, students have 1 year to read at least 5 of the books to be eligible to vote for their favorite. (Although kids get so enthralled with the books that many try to read ALL of them!) This is a state-wide program and there is lots of excitement over which book wins!!! TLA also publishes activities to go along with each book, such as Reader's Theaters scrips which promote fluency and public speaking. The books are always wonderful and the children love being the ones who get to choose the favorite. (Teachers and librarians aren't allowed to vote!) It's the only Children's Book Award chosen by the children!!!

These books are GREAT books!

I've been participating in this program for several years and have found the Texas Bluebonnet Books to be some of the most loved and well-read books in my classroom library! I believe the best way to promote literacy is to find the right book for the right child. Once that happens, children are naturally hooked on reading. When children learn to love reading at a young age it provides the greatest foundation for their future as life-long learners.
