Helping Autistic Students Focus in Class

My Students

Many of our students, particularly those with Autism, have sensory needs that are difficult to meet in the general education setting. Several of our students have a hard time sitting still and staying focused for a given amount of time. It is our job to find creative ways to help meet these needs.

Our school, which has 571 students, houses the K-2 and 3-5 Bridge Programs which help students with Autism Spectrum Disorder.

In 2006, we had 6 students who had a disability of Autism. This number has increased to 31 in 2009. Our programs are specialized to focus on their social, academic, and sensory needs. In order to do that, we are constantly trying new ways to help meet their sensory needs. Sensory buckets are available for each grade level which include fidgets, stress balls, visual timers, etc.... Teachers attend trainings from our Special Education teacher and Occupational Therapist and teacher tips are given out on a regular basis to give teachers new ideas of ways to work with our students who have Autism or sensory needs.

My Project

This year we bought a child's rocking chair to help a student who needed movement to help him focus. The rocking chair also raises him off the ground where his peers are, therefore, helping him keep his hands to himself and not disrupt others. The rocking chair was so successful for this student that we would like to purchase another rocking chair for our other kindergarten class. There are a few students in this additional class who would also benefit from the movement provided through the use of the rocking chair. The Wiggle Cushion that we have requested would also provide movement opportunities for students who have a hard time sitting still and focusing. We have seen both of these items prove successful for students in the past, and would like to provide these strategies to all students who would benefit.

With budget cuts in education it is hard to find resources to buy materials like a rocking chair and wiggle cushion.

These are durable items which can be used year after year to help students with sensory needs. With your help, we will able to purchase these two items which will help several students get the sensory input they need, therefore allowing for them to focus and learn!
