My Students

Many of the students in my class are challenged in regards to reading because of a lack of reading material at home. Reading is just a "school" thing, and so it is not fun. Comic books can change this by bringing some excitement into the mix!

The students in my class live in an inner city environment.

Many of their families struggle with poverty, and many of them have limited resources at home for reading materials. Some do not read at home at all. I have twenty two students in my class, most are African American or Latino.

My Project

In my class when the students see comic books, their eyes light up and they can't wait to dive in and start reading! I hope that the introduction of a large library of comic books in the classroom will bring the struggling readers up to grade level more quickly, as well as bringing a sense of excitement to independent reading time for all the students.

Academically, this will have a big impact on the students who are struggling with reading.

Emotionally, it will brighten the lives of students in a way that reading has yet to do for many of them. It is critical to portray reading as a fun, leisure activity, not a mandatory school responsibility.

This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
