My Students

In Science education, a hands-on, inquiry based approach is essential for a successful learning experience. Sadly, due to the current budget crisis, our school cannot afford to give my students the richness and quality of science education that they need and deserve.

My wonderful and driven group of students live and study in a highly under-resourced section of New York.

Collectively they have had a very diverse set of life experiences, and my time with them thus far has yielded a plethora of insights for them and myself. Our school strives to offer a college preparatory education as early as possible. Working within the budgetary constraints at my school has proved challenging, and without funds to offer a full education, my students are becoming disillusioned and are losing their passion for science. At this point, we cannot even afford a full set of textbooks for the class. This has led my students to lose interest, as the only avenue for learning available to them right now involves sharing textbooks and chalkboard lectures. We have a long way to go to re-invest the students in science. However, my students are always eager to learn, and it would only take a single activity such as an animal dissection to reignite their fervor for the subject.

My Project

To reinvest my students in our Big Science Goals for the year, with your help and generosity I hope to conduct a week long investigation of animal anatomy and physiology via dissection, study, characterization, and analysis of small sharks by pairs of students. The activity will serve as a motivator for my students, as it will take place toward the end of the year and only be offered to students who have mastered the class material with an 80% average or higher. In the activity, the students will start by meticulously characterizing the external anatomy of the shark. They will learn to identify patterns among all members of the animal kingdom, and will get ample practice of more general science skills such as making observations and inferences, keeping a lab notebook, and following the scientific method. This will reinvest my students in the pursuit of scientific knowledge, and the experience will undoubtedly stick with them for a lifetime and prepare them for rigorous college classes.

For young people who have been victims of circumstances beyond their control for their entire lives, a small act of kindness on the part of a generous benefactor echoes far beyond the realm of the classroom.

In our school, the ultimate goal is preparation for college. We strive to equip our students with tools to succeed in any academic environment. With your charitable donation, you will provide my students with an experience that will lend them success in high school, college, and beyond.
