Pint-sized Green Thumbs: Gardening in Our Classroom

My students need an AeroGarden to grow vegetables and herbs in our classroom.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Brrr... We need resources to help us grow plants during our cold and snowy winters! Here in Massachusetts, our growing season begins just as the school year is coming to a close, giving my students little opportunity to create an outdoor garden.

For many of my students, scientific investigation and hands-on exploration may be the spark that inspires success in not only school, but life as well.

I teach 3rd grade in an urban charter school whose mission is that all students can succeed. My students are part of a high need community - the majority are low income, and as children of immigrants, 88% speak English as a second language. My students live in a working class community and many spend their after school hours sitting indoors because it is too dangerous to play outside. Consequently, most of my students have very little exposure to nature and the outdoors. Therefore, it is vital that they receive this exposure at school. The enthusiasm that my students express simply watching a science video or reading a science book would be nothing compared to their reaction to growing live plants in the classroom. Unfortunately, being a charter school, we do not have the funding to purchase the materials I am requesting.

My Project

I am requesting an AeroGarden for my classroom. I would like to grow herbs and vegetables with my students. Since our city is located in the northeast, we have a very short growing season. The AeroGarden would allow us to study plant growth year-round. This project is important because, sadly, most of my students do not even realize that many foods they eat come directly from plants! I would love to use the AeroGarden to promote a better understanding of the natural word, and inspire a class of junior scientists. These materials will be the centerpiece of an interdisciplinary unit of study that involves math, reading, Spanish, and writing, as well as science. This unit will not only improve their scientific knowledge, but their language and communication skills as well.

Your donation will unlock a door and provide one-of-a-kind experiences and opportunities for a wonderful group of eager learners.

I can't wait to see my students reactions when they get to bite into vegetables that they have grown themselves! Thank you for any support you can provide!
