My Students

Weather and climate are very interesting topics to study if you are a student in the mountains of North Carolina. We have four very distinct and beautiful seasons and weather that that is as unique as the people who enjoy it.

I teach a combination class of 4th and 5th graders.

Our school is an old rock school built by the WPA in 1936. We do not have the things the newer schools have so we have learned to use what we have and are creative with what we don't have. We have an enrollment of 220 students in grades K-5 with a mixture of ethnic backgrounds. We have the perfect setting to learn subjects that take us outside and do hands on activities.

My Project

Hands on learning will help build a lifetime of understanding. Part of our science curriculum is to provide opportunities for students to conduct investigations and use appropriate technology to build an understanding of weather and climate. We desperately need a real weather station for our students. We are asking for a solar powered wireless model. We need the real thing in 4th and 5th grade. Measurements and observations will be recorded on a weather board daily and shared with others in the school. My students can also gain an understanding of how solar energy works.

Your help will allow my students to be involved as young meteorologists to gain a better understanding of weather and climate.

Activities include using equipment to measure temperature, rainfall, wind direction and speed, humidity, and barometric pressure.
