This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Help my students with multiple disabilities access the computer!

My students attend a special school in New Jersey for students with multiple disabilities and autism, aged 12-21.

In our class, the age range is from 12-16. In many ways they are like typical teenagers. In other ways, they couldn't be more different. Most teenagers, you can't get off of the computer. Unfortunately, my students cannot get on the computer due to a variety of disabilities affecting fine motor control.

My Project

However, with just a few items, including a touchscreen monitor, a switch, and a switch interface (which is necessary to hook the switch up to the computer), my students would be able to access information on the computer just as their peers would. They would be able to access the Internet, use software to enhance learning and reinforce skills learned in the classroom, and participate in an age appropriate leisure skills activity--independently!

There is a great push to use technology in the classroom to enhance learning and give our students the opportunity to experience the same things everyone else does; however, without assistive technology, our students would not gain anything from the experience.

With the technology I'm hoping for, my students will gain the opportunity and experiences they have not yet had.

This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
