My Students

Help bring poetry into focus for my seventh graders! My students are avid writers of poetry, and are looking to become more versed in their understanding of the artists who came before them. Being able to see their work and the work of others immediately using a document camera will help them grow!

My students are seventh graders attending a public boarding school for underprivileged children in Maryland. They come largely from urban areas, but represent 14 counties throughout the state.

Most come to live at our school from very difficult and varied home situations. While many adults in their lives do not see their potential as scholars and artists at school they are allowed to flourish. They show a rudimentary love of creating poetry, often in the form of spoken word and rap. This form of art is serving as an awesome way for them to express feelings and explore the often difficult, increasingly fascinating lives they lead. They are full of spirit, worries, experiences, ideas, and above all - ambition to rise above the street corners they once saw as their futures. They have shown great talent, but also an understanding that they need to study form and subject from poets who came before them. They also struggle in turning their oral poetry into written word.

My Project

The addition of a document camera to our classroom will change the way my students see poetry by, well, allowing them to see it! Students in my classroom, as well as my poetry and rap group, will be able to examine both their own poetry and the poetry of published authors together. They will be able to put their work up for discussion, and at the same time make alterations while the group sees the changes in real time. They will also be able to break down great poetry and examine meter, rhyme, and other elements collaboratively, as opposed to on individual papers. Work shopping is one of the most beneficial tools for budding writers. By working together with their peers, myself my students will see their work become a focal point of our classroom in a larger than life way through the use of a document camera.

By helping to add a document camera to my classroom you will be making a huge change in the way my students see the validity of their work.

They will be able to transform their feelings about their poetry, which they often see adults react to in a cavalier way, by connecting it to an important and well established tradition. By projecting their creativity you will also be helping to create a community of healthy inspiration and acceptance within our school!
