My Students

Stephenie Meyer, my students dream, also. I want them to tell a story like your "Twilight Saga" of books that were embraced by worlds of readers. I have listened enough to my students' real stories to realize that they can also be the next generation Stephenie Meyer. Let's publish their works.

My 5th & 6th graders should realize their potential to read/write.

Ninety percent are non-proficient readers who are still struggling and reading below grade level. My 5th and 6th graders are in a reading intervention program to develop reading skills and help raise reading scores. Since the beginning of the school, there has been good progress. Students in this group progressively score higher and higher on their reading test. Ninety-eight percent of my students get free lunch. The school district is a high-needs district in Louisiana. A large percentage of students tell me that they do not like to read or write. Yet, they are aware of the many electronic gadgets, cultural events and movies that make them happy. After looking at scores, my initial goal was set. I realized my annual goal would be to raise reading and comprehension scores combined with helping students enjoy reading and writing. Ten percent of my students are proficient readers who also do not practice reading at home.

My Project

Bringing these resources together in a sort of assembly line format employed by the students will give them more responsibility for their work. These resources will change my students' lives for the better by the formations of an unique product that exhibits their lives and experiences. Students will combine all of their compositions into one product that will become their book of academic learning, life experiences, and growth. They will become writers and publishers of their own work. The copy paper will allow students to copy the compositions they have formatted in a word processing application. Then each individual student will compiled their work; then trim pages, using the trimmer; next, bound, using the heavy duty stapler. Students will create an art illustration for each composition with the markers. During this school year, students have learned the writing process by writing about their lives, community, family, friends, ups and downs in life, and happy moments.

My students have grown to like a variety of literature.

Help them connect school to home. By combining reading and writing as supports for each other, students will gain tremendously in comprehension, decoding, and critical thinking. With your help, my struggling readers can appreciate reading and writing by using their own compositions to format and design a book. They will feel like scholars who are writers and publishers simply through imitating the publishing craft
