Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

For so many, Science class brings thoughts of dread, apprehension and fear. Imagine instead walking into science class curious, excited, and filled with anticipation! There are so many wonders to explore and discover in science class and no better way to explore them than real life!

My students are a curious bunch, eager for knowledge and passionate about growing as individuals.... they do, however, often forget this!

But that is where I come in, to remind them daily that life is full of surprises and curiosity is a gift which needs to be shared. I teach over 125 children with dozens of different personalities and interests. Our school district is not overly affluent and with New Jersey in the midst of education budget cuts, supplies are becoming more difficult to acquire. It is my hope that this organization can help these children become interested in learning which will serve them well in the years to come.

My Project

Imagine coming into class and sitting down and starting to work. Now imagine getting to class a few minutes early and eagerly walking to the back of the room to see if any of our projects have changed. Do the tadpoles have legs yet? Are the crystals growing? Did the Venus Fly Traps catch any bugs? Students are talking about Science before the teacher even says a word. My job has now become exponentially easier!! Early this year we began a project to raise tadpoles into frogs. It is a fascinating process to watch the small little tadpoles grow and transform into frogs. The children are truly fascinated with it. They have researched the process and written reports describing the biology of it. More importantly dozens of them check on them daily, in some instance multiple times a day. Between my 120 plus students and the three sixth grade classes that use my lab, nearly 200 children a day have an opportunity to observe this fascinating process.

My goal is to create a terrarium for the mature frogs to live and grow for my current students as well as students in the coming years.

One of the species of frogs is a large bullfrog who is going to need a larger home than I currently have. I hope, with your support, to provide a home for these wonderful creatures who are providing so much to help my students think, explore and care!! Thank you in advance for any and all support!!! MR. B
