Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students will be creating their own interactive notebooks to help them understand, analyze, and synthesize the concepts they will learn in world history. But they need your help!

I teach 120 high school sophomores in Arizona in a low-SES neighborhood with the majority of students on free/reduced lunch.

These students face significant challenges in their home life as well as extreme social pressures that are common among teen in such circumstances (increased prevalence of drugs, sex, violence). Many of these students will be the first in their family to even attend college. Despite these hardships and challenges, I have a terrific group of students who are focused, hard-working, and committed to beating the odds. Last year's students improved scores on the AP World History exam by over 1,000% from the year prior. They have displayed a desire to succeed and be excellent.

My Project

An important concept for students to learn in any world history class, but especially AP World History, is "change and continuity over time." With this in mind, I plan to have my students create an interactive notebook where they keep track of major concepts. They will do this by including key images and descriptions of major periods, events, people, and dates. It will be an in-depth annotated note-taking system where students will be cutting an pasting artifacts into these interactive notebooks as the year goes on. This will help them keep track of the major concepts and get them much more engaged in their learning as they will have the liberty of personalizing the design and layout of their notebook. “We cannot seek achievement for ourselves and forget about progress and prosperity for our community... Our ambitions must be broad enough to include the aspirations and needs of others, for their sakes and for our own" (Cesar Chavez).

Chavez is echoing an idea that most people understand to be true-"No man is an island, entire of itself; every man is a piece of the continent, a part of the main" (John Donne).

As I read my Bible this week, I found that for the people of Corinth, "their extreme poverty overflowed in a wealth of generosity on their part" (2Cor8:2). They gave BECAUSE they were poor. That's because in tough times (like now) we all realize just how important it is to be generous and look out for others. Thank you!
