Soaring With the Wright Brothers!

My students need 24 model rockets and rocket engines to complete our unit on the Wright Brothers and flight.

My Students

Hands-on learning rocks! I teach fourth grade at a low income, inner city school. We have a large population of sped students and consistently low test scores in the areas of math and science. My classroom is a place where the students feel welcome, safe and know that they can be successful!

Our school is a public school located in a low income area.

Our population is mostly African-American. Despite difficulties and obstacles that my students have encountered, they are the most wonderful group of children. They love coming to school and love seeing what our next project is going to be. I work hard to make school as exciting as possible for them and to realize the importance of education. Because we are located in a needy area, it is difficult to come by basic supplies, let alone ones that will make learning exciting. My students study the Wright Brothers and other Ohio inventors each year. They are very interested in this unit. My students are typically low achieving in all subject areas. I see that using the Wright Brothers is a theme that I could use to integrate all subject areas into one exciting unit. I want my students to see how the invention of the Wright Flyer has led to the types of airplanes we have today as well as rockets and space travel.

My Project

I would like to study the Wright Brothers and their invention and how it has greatly impacted us. I would like to build model rockets with my students as a culminating activity to this unit. The building process fits in so well with mathematics and the actual launching of the rockets and how they work fits well into our science curriculum. My students learn best through hands-on activities. How will this change my students' lives for the better? In many ways. They feel so proud to show off what they have accomplished. Learning is not best achieved through just school books. They will have to use real-life skills of following directions, measuring, and "engineering" to complete a rocket that is safe and launchable. That will give them an incredible sense of pride and accomplishment. Furthermore, it will help them gain a deeper understanding of the concepts of flight and air.

This project fits so well into STEM learning (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) which are the jobs of the future. When my students get to build and create, they get so excited! I have several students who are not on-level readers so the typical book and paper work is very frustrating for them. When they can create something they are proud of, that pride really shows!
