Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

You will be the future engineers of America and we must have building experience starting right now!

My children are Hispanic and they are low income children.

The children are willing to work hard depending on the expectations. My children work hard for me because I expect the best that they can give. They are the best 5th grade class academically and discipline in Houston, TX. It is expected that most of these children will not make it in the future and they might be right because they face many obstacles in their lives. If I can make a difference in their lives by instilling or triggering some kind of curiosity in them, I am willing to do it. This year, I had them in groups building anything they wanted with different materials. They were excited because they were showing them off! Overall, most of the children are great but there is a great need because the neighborhood they live in is filled with gangs, drugs, etc. They need to be motivated and think outside the box!

My Project

These resources will open a new way of thinking for the kids because they are hands-on material. I plan to use the Lego's in basic areas like math and science. In math, I plan to use them with area and perimeter. In science, I plan to use them with simple machines. Towards the end of the year, I plan to move them into building better things. This is a great way to start the kids off by building small things and then moving them into Robotics. Robotics is my next move, but I need time to learn it and then show it to them.

My project is important because I want these children to have experience in building things.

I think that if they are able to obtain the skills then they will want to move on to do bigger and better things in middle school. I want to instill the seed and I want it to grow!
