This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Do you wish you had a written account of your family's history?

Our school is low-income and more students are English language learners than not.

Almost the entire population is first or second generation American. Therefore their families' immigration stories are omnipresent in their day-to-day. Their first languages and cultures are evident not just in school and at home. We are located in Jackson Heights, the famous melting pot neighborhood in Queens, New York!

My Project

In our Immigration Unit, students will record an interview with a family member or friend about their "old world", "journey" and "new world" experiences. Using recording devices will allow the immigrants interviewed to speak fully and openly. Three devices are necessary so that each student can borrow one in a timely fashion. Plus, students can use their new typing skills to transcribe the interviews! Without the recording devices, the interviews would lose integrity!

I always tell me students to work to their potential.

With these recording devices, their families' stories will reach their potential. Not a snippet of our immigrant interviews will be lost. After recording the interviews and transcribing them, each student will make a book for their family to have for generations to come!
