This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I loved school, but I LOVED after school even more!! We are a brand new high school that needs after school sports... and Boy's Soccer is it!

My students immigrated to the US from all around the world!

They have been in the US for 4 years or less, and come to my school to improve their English, learn about other cultures, and prepare for college! My students are resilient, motivated, and eager to do everything, especially soccer. During lunch, my students will quickly finish their food so that they can play soccer in the courtyard. They make goals out of trash cans just so that they can play one game before going back to class. They are amazing students with rich backgrounds and open hearts, and they are the reason my school is truly unique.

My Project

In a matter of only 8 months, my students have gone from little or no English to discussions about oppression! However, as amazing as they are academically, sometimes life interferes. Since my students are all recent immigrants, they struggle with their transition to the US. Many have left their homes, their community, and their family to come to the US for a better life. These resources will help my students overcome their hardships by allowing them to build a new community through soccer. Growing up in countries like El Salvador, Honduras, Vietnam, Yemen, and more, the one common bond that these boys have is soccer. No matter language, country, or age, these boys will practice together, work collaboratively, and persevere through their adversities... together. Essentially, these resources will be the catalyst that motivates them in school and through life. Therefore, I am requesting balls, cones, shinguards, and goalie gloves so that my boys can start playing soccer in a league!

This soccer team is not just an after school activity that my students love.

It is a means to keep them safe and off the streets. Often times, my students feel so abandoned and lonely as a result of their immigration that they seek a community anywhere. In my urban city, these communities lay in gangs. As a prevention, my students came up with the brilliant idea of creating a soccer team! And your donations will help them succeed in school, and ultimately through life. Thank you.
