My Students

12th grade English in my state focuses on British Literature. Aside from Harry Potter, they don't seem to have any interest in books from England. Dracula is an exciting book that will help get them excited about reading not just British Lit, but books in general.

My students are college bound seniors.

They are your typical teenagers: they play sports, and they're active in school clubs. Regardless of gender, they are all intrigued by the current vampire fad. It doesn't matter if it's Twilight or True Blood, they seem to love reading, watching, and talking about anything related to vampires. I think this is the perfect hook to get them interested in one of the original vampires- Dracula!

My Project

When you think of the books you read in high school, there is usually at least one that sticks with you. It's been a while since I've been able to teach Dracula, but I know that it will be the book that sticks with my kids. It's important that our students read books from other countries, and Dracula touches on many of the issues involved with exploring and learning about other cultures. What begins, for them, just a book on vampires, can teach them so much more about themselves and the world around them.

Since 12th grade is not a tested subject, we do not get much money for novels.

Most of our stories come from the literature book, which only bores my students. English is about more than a textbook. It's about understanding different cultures from different time periods by reading the words they left behind. By reading about our past, students can decide what they want their future to be. Most of the kids are beginning to see their futures aren't so far away.
